On 26th August 2 Southern Cross 5th Wheelers met at Goondiwindi to head for the annual Betoota, Birdsville and Bedourie south west Queensland annual Race Meetings.  Mel and Chris Jones, Lorraine and myself travelled with over nights at the Nindigully Pub out through Cunnamulla and the Toompine Hotel then Quilpie.  We then met up with 2 other Southern Cross 5th Wheeler owners, Bruce and Sharon Webster then Jack and Chris Hornery at Windora.

Jack and Chris are Mates with Fred Brophy, the Boxing Tent Owner. The first Meet at Betoota was attended by about 600 people.  Good fun was had by all.  Next we were of to Birdsville for the big race Meet over 2 days of about 7000 race enthusiasts.

This Meet was spoiled only by the Boys in Blue from Mt Isa who were not making themselves very popular with the Patrons.  We did a lot of 4 wheel driving on both Little and Big Red in the Simpson Desert.

The next stop was Bedourie which I think was the best Meet with about 350 People.  Mel and Chris won best named Motorhome with “2 Tassie Tigers” which was a great bonus!!  There were about 50 Motor Homes on safari with a few 5th Wheelers included.  They came from Broken Hill via the Strazlekie Track.  The story goes that 2x 5th Wheelers turned back because they could not handle the gravel roads.  All in all the 4 Southern Cross 5th Wheelers had no problems and handled the rough with ease.
