Pre-Trip Off-Road Caravan Inspection Checklist
Before heading off sealed roads, a thorough inspection can prevent breakdowns and damage. Use this practical checklist to prepare your off-road caravan for remote and corrugated travel.
Before any off-road or remote trip, a pre-departure inspection is one of the most important things you can do. Corrugations, dust, heat and vibration quickly expose small issues that would otherwise go unnoticed on sealed roads.
This checklist focuses on the areas most likely to cause problems when travelling off-road.
Chassis & suspension
☐ Visually inspect chassis rails and cross members for cracks or impact damage
☐ Check suspension mounts and bushes for wear or movement
☐ Inspect shock absorbers for leaks, damage, or heat discolouration - repeated corrugations place heavy load on dampers, particularly off-road nitro gas shocks designed for caravan use
☐ Confirm all suspension bolts are tight and secured - using a torque wrench helps ensure fasteners are set to manufacturer specifications
☐ Check wheel alignment and tyre wear patterns
Wheels & tyres
☐ Inspect tyres for cuts, bulges, or uneven wear
☐ Set tyre pressures appropriate for off-road conditions - tools like preset tyre deflators make it easier to achieve consistent pressures before corrugated sections
☐ Check spare tyres (including pressure and condition)
☐ Confirm wheel nuts are torqued correctly using a suitable torque wrench
☐ Inspect rims for cracks or deformation
Coupling, chains & brakes
☐ Inspect the hitch or coupling for wear and secure operation
☐ Check safety chains and shackles for wear or damage
☐ Test electric brakes and the breakaway system
☐ Confirm brake controller operation from the tow vehicle
Electrical & power systems
☐ Check battery charge levels and overall battery health
☐ Inspect visible wiring for chafe points, loose connections, or vibration wear
☐ Test all internal and external lights
☐ Confirm solar input and charging operation
☐ Secure all battery mounts and covers - heavy-duty battery boxes and mounts help reduce vibration-related failures on rough roads
Plumbing & gas
☐ Check water tanks and mounting points for movement or leaks
☐ Inspect hoses and fittings for rubbing, cracking, or abrasion
☐ Test water pump operation
☐ Check gas lines and fittings for damage or contact with moving components
☐ Confirm gas appliances ignite and operate correctly
Interior & storage
☐ Secure drawers, doors and latches
☐ Check cabinetry fixings for looseness - corrugations commonly loosen screws over time
☐ Secure loose items inside the van
☐ Confirm fridge and appliances are locked for travel
☐ Use safe access equipment such as a telescopic A-frame ladder when loading or checking roof-mounted gear
Final checks
☐ Verify caravan loading is within ATM and GTM limits
☐ Confirm tow vehicle setup, mirrors, and connections
☐ Carry essential spares and tools appropriate for remote travel
☐ Do a final walk-around inspection before departure
Why this checklist matters
Pre-departure inspections don’t prevent every issue, but they dramatically reduce the risk of failures becoming trip-ending problems - especially when travelling corrugated or remote routes.
A few minutes spent checking now can save hours (or days) dealing with avoidable issues later.
